Sharpen Your Oral Communication Skills!

In this exercise, students will learn about the elements and criteria that define successful oral presentations. Using a “rubric” or assessment guide, students will evaluate a short example student presentation. In the process, students will review and reflect on what is required for effective oral communication, so that they can use that knowledge to improve their own skills and future performance.

When deciding on what oral presentation video to show to students, I reviewed the suggested Student Conference on Conservation Science award winner videos found here (https://amnh.org/sccsny). I liked the 2017 winner as an example of a young woman who spoke with great expression and clarity about wolf disease in Yellowstone and the 2016 winner of a young man also with good technique and an easier topic to understand for the undergraduate students (using drones to study marine mammals).Barbara Watts, 1/9/2019
The original website for Student Conference on Conservation Science-New York changed and so we've updated the Exercise Solutions to include a collection of possible presentations to choose from with direct links to YouTube.Suzanne Macey, 11/11/2020
